Hydraulic Suction Strainers

First Chance protection for the pump.

Located before the inlet port, suction strainers serve to protect the pump from fluid contamination. They have relatively coarse elements, due to cavitation limitations of pumps (always consult the pump manufacturer for inlet restrictions). For this reason, suction strainers are not used as a primary protection against contamination. Most hydraulic systems should have a combination of suction, pressure, return and off-line filters.

Suction strainers are referred to by "mesh" size:

  • 60 mesh=238 microns
  • 100 mesh=149 microns
  • 200 mesh=74 microns

All Steel Connector Type
Suction Strainer General specifications
The traditional all metal sump strainer has stainless steel pleated elements. Elements are supported internally with perforated metal tubes. Continuous epoxy-bonded joints will not leak fluid around the element. They can be cleaned and used indefinitely.

"Nyl-End" sump strainers (Style P) are made with the same construction as the standard all-metal units, but with the connector end pieces molded in a single piece of glass-reinforced nylon resin.
